The CAVS 10U continued their winning tradition by capturing the championship June 6th and 7th at our own CAVS Summer Classic. The CAVS 10U scored impressive victories throughout the tournament and finished undefeated.
The CAVS began pool play against Valley Xtreme. The CAVS took control of the game from the beginning. Maurice Walton controlled the boards and scored easy lay-ups. DJ McDonald hit open jumpers from the outside to balance out the attack. The CAVS won easily 41 – 23. Next up for the CAVS was SGV. The CAVS used their size advantage against the smaller team to score easy lay-ups. Chasen Pender and Mike Irving all scored on easy lay-ups. Kyle Fisher scored on some long distance shots. The CAVS won 58 – 38. Saturday also marked the return of Isaiah Roby, who has been out for over 6 months with a knee injury.
On Sunday, the CAVS would begin the playoffs against a team that they have had quite a few battles with over the past year. The CAVS matched up against the CA Heat. The CAVS would rely on the sharp ball handling skills of DJ McDonald to off-set the constant pressure of the CA Heat. The Heat’s guards did their best to pressure DJ all over the court and force turnovers, but the CAVS guards were up to the challenge as Kyle and Elijah Walker helped keep control of the ball. On defense, the CAVS pressured the CA Heat and forced their guards into multiple turnovers. The CAVS earned their way to the championship by winning 44 – 20.
The championship would match the CAVS against another rival, All City. All City wanted to beat the CAVS desperately after losing to us in Palm Springs. The CAVS started the game quickly and forced All Cityinto turnovers. The CAVS scored on easy lay-ups by Maurice and DJ to start the game. All City was pushing the basketball up the court to force a fast tempo game. Brian Deveraux was plenty quick enough to stay with the All Cityguards and, on a few occasions, blow past them on offense. Skyler Barry and Colden Davis came in off the bench to keep up the defensive intensity. The CAVS held a slim lead at halftime. All City was not about to give up. They started the 2nd half quickly and began to chip away at the CAVS lead. All City was able to score on some easy lay-ups and their guards began to heat up from the outside. With less then 3 minutes in the game, All City took the lead. The CAVS did not flinch. Behind the scoring of DJ, the CAVS pushed forward. The teams traded baskets, but with 50 seconds left to go, the CAVS regained the lead. All City called time out. Afterwards, the CAVS walked backed onto the court and smothered their opponents with defense. All City could not score. The CAVS came back up the court and took the lead for good after DJ made two free throws. The CAVS won 35 – 32. It was another great battle against All City.
