9u_cavs_avac_-_offense_-_01-10.jpgThe cold desert wind blew in from the west but the CAVS 9U had a hot performance.  The team started the event with a Saturday game against the AVAC Hoyas.  Our team came to play defense with the help of newcomer Kayla.  She locked down on several defenders from the Hoyas.  Tristen had another fantastic defensive and offensive game.  He stopped their best point guard.  Bryce Wigton contributed with a late minute basket.  CAVS defeated AVAC Hoyas 23-9.

9u_cavs_avac_-_driving_-_01-10.jpgThen in the semis, the CAVS came back from an 8-point deficit to take the victory and forward on to the Finals.  The CAVS pressed  full court the entire second half.  Thanks to Anthony Spann’s driving lay-ups and Grant's rebounding, the CAVS were able to past the Gladiators in the second half.  Jonathan was instrumental with his full-court defense and many steals. CAVS defeated Gladiators 27-19.

9u_cavs_avac_-_defense_-_01-10.jpgIn the finals the CAVS lost to the Spurs from Torrance 36-24.  The CAVS showed a lot of heart by their defensive intensity.  Brandon Perez showed his good CAVS – “D” by many help positions against the Spurs quick guards.  Justin Davis had a good rebounding game and made 2 baskets in the finals.

The 9Us had another very good performance and made the CAVS organization very proud.

11u_cavs_avac_2nd_place_01-10.jpgThe CAVS 11U headed out to Lancasterthe weekend of January 30th – 31st to participate in the AVAC New Years Kick Off Classic basketball tournament.  It would prove to be a challenging weekend for the team.  The CAVS opened pool play against Vegas Elite.  The CAVS started the game slowly against Vegas Elite.  Vegas Elite was a speedy team that was able to keep up with the team speed of the CAVS.  DJ McDonald hit some open jumpers early in the game to keep the game close.  Vegas Elite led most of the first half and held a 10 – 14 lead at halftime.  As the second half started, the CAVS walked back out on the court determined to send a message.  The loose balls that were going to Vegas Elite in the first half were now with the CAVS.  The CAVS 11U defense tightened up, as Brian Deveraux and Elijah Walker pressured the Vegas guards into multiple turnovers which led to either a lay-up or free-throws.  Chasen Pender made his presence felt down low as he used his size to muscle up some lay-ups from down low.  Midway through the second half, the CAVS had gained the lead 21 – 18.  The game continued to be very physical as both Colden Davis and Skyler Barry made free-throws.  However, once the CAVS gained the lead, they would not give it up.  The CAVS went on to win a tough game 34 – 27.

11u_cavs_avac_-_robert_-_01-10.jpgThe next game for the CAVS would be much easier.  The CAVS faced the Jr. Hoopstars.  The CAVS had a huge size difference on this team.  As the game began, the CAVS offense tried to work on some specific plays.  The CAVS scoring was down as they continued to work on specific offensive plays.  At halftime, the CAVS led 23 – 13.  In the second half, the CAVS used their full court press to extend their lead.  All the players scored easy lay-ups, as the CAVS cruised to a 51 – 23 victory.

The CAVS 11U had earned the 1st seed in their pool.  They began the playoffs against the San Pedro Knights.  The CAVS would dominate this game from beginning to end.  DJ and Brian led the team on the offensive side.  Both guards scored on impressive drives to the basket.  Chasen also used his size to dominate the smaller opponents down low.  The CAVS held a 24 – 8 lead at halftime.  In the second half, Skyler and Elijah would help force turnovers which led to easy lay-ups for their teammates.  The CAVS went onto win 44 – 20.

11u_cavs_avac_-_defense_-_01-10.jpgThe CAVS then faced the Mountaineers.  This team had good size and was ready to battle.  The guards dominated the game.  DJ, Brian, Elijah, and Kyle Fisher led the scoring charge in the first half.  The CAVS defense was not as stingy as normal, but the team led at halftime 23 – 18.  In the second half, the CAVS defense started to come together.  The team defense clamped down on the Mountaineer offense and held them scoreless for most of the second half.  The post play of Chasen and Mike produced easy lay-ups, and the CAVS 11U went on to win 45 – 22.

11u_cavs_avac_-_elite_01-10.jpgThe CAVS 11U earned their spot in the finals.  The CAVS would match up against Vegas Elite who they had beaten earlier in pool play.  The CAVS 11U players were fatigued heading into the final game since they had been playing short-handed with 6 players most of the weekend.  DJ started the scoring for the CAVS team.  The team tried to take advantage of the defensive set by Vegas Elite, and DJ hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the game.  The CAVS took an early 11 – 5 lead.  The CAVS then hit a cold spell and could not get any shots to fall on offense.  At halftime, the CAVS were clinging to an 11 – 9 lead.  As the second half began, the CAVS offense still could not find its range.  Vegas Elite jumped on the opportunity.  Midway through the second half, Vegas Elite led 21 – 14.  The CAVS players pulled together everything they had left to make a final charge at Vegas Elite.  DJ and Brian scored on a series of back-to-back baskets to chip away at the deficit.  With 6 minutes left, the CAVS took the lead 22 - 21 with a 3 pointer by DJ.  The CAVS defense dug down to shut down the Vegas Elite offense.  On the next possession, Brian was called for his 5th foul, which took him out of the game.  The 5 remaining CAVS would have their work cut out for them if they were to pull out the victory.  The defense matched up against Vegas Elite desperate for a stop.  The teams exchanged baskets back and forth.  With only 50 seconds left, the CAVS still trailed 26 – 28.  The CAVS could not score the remainder of the game, and Vegas Elite went on to win with the final score 26 – 28.  It was a tough loss for the team.  The CAVS 11U will re-group and be ready for the next tournament.

CAVS 10U Win Spartans New Year's Tournament PDF Print E-mail

10u_spartans_mike_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgThe CAVS 10U rang in the new year with their first victory in 2010.  The team played in the Spartans New Years Tournament at the HAX Center in Los Angeles the weekend of January 2nd and 3rd.  The CAVS 10U opened pool play against the HAX – A team.  The CAVS started the game slowly, and it was obvious the team was a little rusty after being away from the basketball court for over a week.  Johnathan Daniels took control from the point guard position and moved the ball to his open teammates.  Mike Irving and Isaiah Roby both scored from down low.  Kyle Fisher and Elijah Walker hit open shots from the perimeter.  It was a rather sloppy game for the CAVS, the team rolled to a 25 – 14 victory.

10u_spartans_free_throw_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgNext up for the CAVS was the South Bay Youth Sports team.  The team seemed to shake off their rust from the first game, and dominated the SBYS team from the opening tip.  Mike and Isaiah dominated the post and scored easy lay-ups.  Haazim Amirali and Grant Drogsch joined in the scoring from the post.  Kyle and Elijah hit open 3 pointers from the perimeter.  The CAVS had a dominating 21 – 4 lead at halftime.  In the second half, the CAVS defense continued to dominate the South Bay team.  The CAVS defensive pressure was too much for the South Bay guards.  The CAVS forced multiple turnovers that led to easy baskets.  The CAVS cruised to a 44 – 14 victory.

10u_spartans_rebound_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgThe CAVS finished up pool play by facing the Monarchs.  This was a large team that from first glance matched up well against the CAVS in terms of size.  The first half was riddled with fouls, as both teams got in to foul trouble early.  The Monarchs had a difficult time slowing down the high-low game of Isaiah and Mike.  Johnathan forced turnovers and drove to the basket.  He hit some tough shots down low.  At halftime, the CAVS led 25- 16.  In the second half, the CAVS offense took over the game.  Mike scored from down low as well as from the free throw line.  The Monarchs couldn’t seem to find a defensive solution for the CAVS.  Elijah and Kyle both had multiple jump shots in the second half.  Grant also made the most of his playing time and grabbed rebounds and made some excellent passes.  The CAVS rolled to a 40 – 27 win.

The CAVS were undefeated and had earned their way to the championship.  They would be facing the HAX – S team.  The CAVS and this HAX team have faced each other multiple times now and each time they play it’s a competitive game.  This game would also prove to be a battle.  The CAVS took control of the game early.  Mike made his presence felt and scored multiple lay ups from the post.  Isaiah and Elijah were swarming the court on defense forcing turnovers.  Johnathan and Kyle were up to the challenge and sank their shots when they were left open.  At halftime, the CAVS led 23 – 13.  The HAX team were not about to give up.  The HAX defense turned up the intensity in the second half and held the CAVS scoreless for several minutes.  The CAVS also found themselves in foul trouble.  Midway through the second half, the HAX team cut the CAVS lead to 6 points.  The CAVS were clinging to a 25 – 19 lead.  The CAVS offense finally got going as Mike and Elijah both scored tough baskets.  With 5 minutes left in the game the scrappy HAX team was still within striking range.  The CAVS still had the lead 36 – 29.  The HAX team started to press full court on defense.  They gave up a few easy lay ups to the CAVS on defense, but the HAX guards hit a series of 3 pointers to keep them in the game.  With only 34 seconds left, the CAVS still led 42 – 37.  The HAX team was forced to foul the CAVS to try and get the ball back.  Johnathan, Mike and Kyle hit their free throws, and the CAVS went on to win the tournament 47 – 39.  It was an exciting game deserving of a championship.  Congratulations CAVS.
