CAVS Academic Excellence Award Winners PDF Print E-mail

On the basketball court, the CAVS develop the necessary fundamentals to prepare its players for the next level.  But none of that is possible without also succeeding in the classroom.  The CAVS would like to acknowledge the players below that have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better in the classroom, while also excelling on the basketball court.  Great job CAVS!

CAVS 15U Win Swoosh March Madness Tournament PDF Print E-mail

15u_swoosh_032709-1-thumb.jpgThe CAVS 15U participated in the Swoosh March Madness Tournament in Santa Barbara March 28-29.  It was the first tournament for the CAVS 15U since returning after the completion of the high school basketball season.  It was as if they never left.  With the core unit back together again, and a few new faces, the CAVS got off to a great start.

The first game of the tournament was against the Santa Barbara Ballers.  This was a game the CAVS defense dominated from the beginning to the end.  In the first-half, the CAVS gave up only 8 points.  The CAVS really turned up the defensive pressure in the second-half, allowing just "1" point.  Emotions ran high throughout the game.  The Ballers tried to rough-up the CAVS by playing a bit more physical, but the CAVS had an answer for everything the Ballers tried.  Ryan Wright and Jonathan Bell led a well-balanced attack as the CAVS dismantled the Ballers 59-8.

15u_swoosh_032709-2-thumb.jpgTeam West was the opponent for game #2 .  The CAVS jumped out to an early lead behind the explosiveness of Steven Jones.  He attacked the basket the entire game.  The CAVS also rode the wave of momentum after Kennedy Edward exploded for a monster slam dunk.  The CAVS built a 15-point lead and were rolling.  However, Team West wasn't shaken.  They hung in and had a second-half charge that fell short.  The CAVS held on for a 55-50 win.

The CAVS began play on Sunday against the Ventura Heat.  This was another game where the CAVS opened up a big lead and never looked back.  Led by the inside play of Ryan Wright, who dominated on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, Ventura had no answer for him.  Tanner Samson led the charge from the outside, knocking down timely 3-pointers to help deny the Heat any chance of a comeback.  The CAVS pressure defense wore down Ventura as they seemed to be out of gas by the end of the game as the CAVS won 70-53.

Next up for the CAVS was Highland.  The CAVS were in control of the game the entire time.  After a slow start, the CAVS got going and never looked back.  Once again, the CAVS defensive pressure wore the opponent down.  The big man combination of Ryan Wright and Kennedy Edwards was just too much for the small Highland team.  Even with the CAVS not playing their best game, they cruised to a 52-24 win.

15u_swoosh_032709-3-thumb.jpgThe best game of the tournament was next, against the L.A. City Wildcats.  The Wildcats are a very physical and athletic team and they pushed the CAVS to the limit in an action filled track meet.  Everytime the CAVS would gain a little breathing room, the tenacious Wildcats would make a run and get back in the game.  Once again, the CAVS big men, Ryan Wright and Kennedy Edwards, were the difference makers.  Their size and skill was really unmatched throughout the tournament.  Tanner Samson's calming influence in the game was also huge.  Tanner hit three huge 3-pointers that helped to keep the Wildcats from taking the lead late in the game.  This was a game worthy of being a championship battle.  The 74-69 CAVS win did advance them to the championship.  Did the CAVS have enough left in the tank for the championship game after this battle?

Finally, the CAVS reached the championship game after a long Sunday.  the Thunderdome's center court was the location for the tournament's final game.  The Oxnard Bulls were the opponent.  The CAVS started off slow as the Bulls attacked the basket and tried to run with the CAVS.  The CAVS began to settle down and dig in.  Ryan Wright, who had an outstanding tournament, led the charge.  Ryan took care of rebounding, blocking shots, scoring, and most importantly, being the vocal leader this team needs.  Tanner Samson and Tigran Martirosyan each hit 3 big 3-pointers each as the CAVS eventually cruised to an easy 57-24 win to clinch the championship.

There is work to be done for this team to fully reach its potential.  This is a group that can be one of the best teams in the country.  Welcome back CAVS 15U.

CAVS 14U Win Swoosh March Madness Championship PDF Print E-mail

14u_swoosh_032709-championship-thumb.jpgThe CAVS 14U went to the Swoosh Tournament in Santa Barbara March 27-28 in search of their 3rd straight Swoosh Tournament Championship and 6th straight championship overall.  The tournament began with a re-match with the High Desert Crush, a team the CAVS defeated in the Valencia Swoosh Tournament two weeks ago.  It was a heated match-up two weeks ago and the same was expected for this one.

The CAVS jumped on High Desert from the beginning.  The CAVS came out with a purpose and were clicking offensively and defensively.  The CAVS led 41-17 at halftime.  The CAVS used a well balanced attack led by Chris Yanku who hit four 3-pointers to cruise to an easy 54-24 win.  Once again, High Desert walked away upset and wanting another shot at the CAVS.

Game #2 against Fresno Havoc was the total opposite of the first game.  The CAVS did get off to a quick start led by Antwon Johnson who outscored the Havoc by himself at halftime.  The CAVS defense looked really well and held the Havoc to 8 total points as they took the 20-8 lead into halftime.  The second-half was the worst half I have seen this team play since back in San Diego Thanksgiving weekend.  The CAVS did not score in the second-half until there was 6:36 on the clock.  Chris Johnson's defense in the paint helped keep the CAVS in the game during the scoring drought.  A big 3-pointer by Chris Yanku late in the game helped to put the game out of reach for the Havoc.  The CAVS won an ugly game, 30-19.

The CAVS earned a #1 seed in bracket play and received a first round bye, so they would only need to win one game late Sunday afternoon to earn a spot in the championship game.  The opponent for the semi-final game turned out to be Fresno Havoc.  This time, in the rematch, the CAVS played much better.  Bruno Castillo, who had a terrible game in the first match-up against the Havoc, had something to prove and proved it!  He hit four 3-pointers and was a monster on the boards.  He even played great defense.  In the second-half, the entire team played great defense and held the Havoc to 5 total points.  The CAVS easily won 40-17 and advanced to the championship game.

Sunday afternoon at a tournament has become the best day of the week for the CAVS 14U.  Even though Sunday signals the end of the weekend and the beginning of the return to school, they know that a championship celebration is usually in the works.  Trying to prevent another CAVS championship was the team that is quickly becoming the CAVS most heated/hated rival, High Desert Crush.  The Crush wanted the re-match, to prove they can finally beat the CAVS; the CAVS wanted to prove to the Crush that 3 times mean you are out.  The CAVS started out a bit slow.  The CAVS horrible free-throw shooting kept the Crush in the game early.  The CAVS had a 25-14 halftime lead.  In the second-half, the CAVS turned up the defensive pressure and used a well balanced attack to take control of the game and rout the Crush for the second time in 2 days.  Everyone pitched in as the CAVS had one of the most impressive "team" wins all year.  They had an answer for everything High Desert threw at them and proved once and for all that they are the best team.  The CAVS came home with a 47-24 win and the Championship.  The CAVS 14U continue to make Sunday a winning tradition.  Six straight and counting.
