The CAVS 10U joined their teammates in Lancasterthe weekend of January 30th and 31st for the AVAC Hoyas New Year’s Kick Off Basketball Tournament. The CAVS 10U began pool play against the Hub City Gym Rats. This game was dominated by the CAVS from the opening tip off. Elijah Walker and Kyle Fisher hit open shots and scored on drives to the basket. Mike Irving used his size to dominate in the post as he scored multiple baskets. Jonathan Daniels and Hunter Barry provided strong support off the bench. The CAVS 10U held a 26 – 1 lead at halftime and never looked back. Isaiah Roby added some easy lay-ups in the second half. The CAVS cruised to a 39 – 3 victory.
The CAVS 10U matched up against the home team AVAC Hoyas for the second game. Once again the CAVS had a size advantage in the post. Mike and Isaiah Roby were a force to be reckoned with. Mike led the way by scoring multiple lay-ups with much smaller defenders guarding him. Grant Drogosch and Hunter played solid minutes off the bench. The CAVS only held a 12 – 9 lead at halftime. In the second half, the CAVS defense tightened up. Grant and Kyle forced multiple turnovers on defense. Isaiah and Hunter tracked down the majority of the rebounds. The CAVS 10U went on to win 27 – 18 and they earned the first seed in their pool.
The first round playoff game was a forfeit, so the CAVS advanced to the semi-finals against the Monarchs. The Monarchs are a large team that has faced the CAVS multiple times. The CAVS were also playing short-handed with only 6 players. The CAVS started the game with a fast pace. Kyle and Elijah pushed the ball up the court at every opportunity which resulted in some each shots for Mike. Isaiah and Hunter also got some open looks on offense which helped the CAVS build a 24 – 17 lead at halftime. In the second half, the CAVS got balanced scoring from the team as all players scored. The team defense of the CAVS was too much for the Monarchs to handle as they committed several turnovers. The CAVS rolled to a 53 – 32 win. The CAVS were marching into another tournament championship game.
The CAVS would match-up against Vegas Elite. The two teams battled back and forth from the opening tip. Jonathan and Kyle faced heavy defensive pressure when they had the ball. Isaiah and Mike did their best to try and score from down low. Mike hit some tough shots while Isaiah was sent to the free-throw line. At halftime, the CAVS trailed 18 – 20. In the second half, the CAVS players came out with fiery intensity. The defensive pressure was starting to affect Vegas Elite. The CAVS were starting to get some easier shots as Vegas Elite started to turn the ball over. With 16 minutes left to play, the CAVS tied the game at 23 – 23. The CAVS offense then started to turn things up. Kyle hit two huge 3 pointers as the CAVS started to pull away with a 37 – 29 lead. Mike and Grant continued to battle down low. The CAVS never looked back and went on to win 42 – 38. Congratulations CAVS.
