10u_spartans_mike_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgThe CAVS 10U rang in the new year with their first victory in 2010.  The team played in the Spartans New Years Tournament at the HAX Center in Los Angeles the weekend of January 2nd and 3rd.  The CAVS 10U opened pool play against the HAX – A team.  The CAVS started the game slowly, and it was obvious the team was a little rusty after being away from the basketball court for over a week.  Johnathan Daniels took control from the point guard position and moved the ball to his open teammates.  Mike Irving and Isaiah Roby both scored from down low.  Kyle Fisher and Elijah Walker hit open shots from the perimeter.  It was a rather sloppy game for the CAVS, the team rolled to a 25 – 14 victory.

10u_spartans_free_throw_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgNext up for the CAVS was the South Bay Youth Sports team.  The team seemed to shake off their rust from the first game, and dominated the SBYS team from the opening tip.  Mike and Isaiah dominated the post and scored easy lay-ups.  Haazim Amirali and Grant Drogsch joined in the scoring from the post.  Kyle and Elijah hit open 3 pointers from the perimeter.  The CAVS had a dominating 21 – 4 lead at halftime.  In the second half, the CAVS defense continued to dominate the South Bay team.  The CAVS defensive pressure was too much for the South Bay guards.  The CAVS forced multiple turnovers that led to easy baskets.  The CAVS cruised to a 44 – 14 victory.

10u_spartans_rebound_-_0110_-_thumb.jpgThe CAVS finished up pool play by facing the Monarchs.  This was a large team that from first glance matched up well against the CAVS in terms of size.  The first half was riddled with fouls, as both teams got in to foul trouble early.  The Monarchs had a difficult time slowing down the high-low game of Isaiah and Mike.  Johnathan forced turnovers and drove to the basket.  He hit some tough shots down low.  At halftime, the CAVS led 25- 16.  In the second half, the CAVS offense took over the game.  Mike scored from down low as well as from the free throw line.  The Monarchs couldn’t seem to find a defensive solution for the CAVS.  Elijah and Kyle both had multiple jump shots in the second half.  Grant also made the most of his playing time and grabbed rebounds and made some excellent passes.  The CAVS rolled to a 40 – 27 win.

The CAVS were undefeated and had earned their way to the championship.  They would be facing the HAX – S team.  The CAVS and this HAX team have faced each other multiple times now and each time they play it’s a competitive game.  This game would also prove to be a battle.  The CAVS took control of the game early.  Mike made his presence felt and scored multiple lay ups from the post.  Isaiah and Elijah were swarming the court on defense forcing turnovers.  Johnathan and Kyle were up to the challenge and sank their shots when they were left open.  At halftime, the CAVS led 23 – 13.  The HAX team were not about to give up.  The HAX defense turned up the intensity in the second half and held the CAVS scoreless for several minutes.  The CAVS also found themselves in foul trouble.  Midway through the second half, the HAX team cut the CAVS lead to 6 points.  The CAVS were clinging to a 25 – 19 lead.  The CAVS offense finally got going as Mike and Elijah both scored tough baskets.  With 5 minutes left in the game the scrappy HAX team was still within striking range.  The CAVS still had the lead 36 – 29.  The HAX team started to press full court on defense.  They gave up a few easy lay ups to the CAVS on defense, but the HAX guards hit a series of 3 pointers to keep them in the game.  With only 34 seconds left, the CAVS still led 42 – 37.  The HAX team was forced to foul the CAVS to try and get the ball back.  Johnathan, Mike and Kyle hit their free throws, and the CAVS went on to win the tournament 47 – 39.  It was an exciting game deserving of a championship.  Congratulations CAVS.
